This day inaugurates the official holiday season. How wonderful that it begins with thanksgiving! I saw a commercial on tv that asked, “What are you thankful for this year?” While this question is such an important one to consider on this day dedicated for such contemplation, I was surprised to see it actually posed on tv. It made me pause and need to reflect on the year that has transpired. And wonder, what really am I thankful for this year? Some years are more difficult than others; this one has had too much stress for my liking. But as I admit this, I then have to add that all of this year’s stress is due to happenings for which I am deeply grateful!
Ultimately, I answered the question with only one answer. I am thankful that God is still in charge. Amid social turbulence, natural disasters, terrorism, acts of violence, and people in crisis over their own identities, we live amongst tragedy. And despair. We don’t know what is around the corner, but we can know this one thing. God is still in charge. And knowing that evokes my deepest thanksgiving.
