Healthy Mouth; Healthy Body!

I love a clean mouth.  You know, that slick run-your-tongue-over-your-teeth clean right after your regular cleaning at the dentist.  Well, I now have that kind of clean mouth every day!  For a month, I have been anxious to share with you this newfound discovery.  It is called oil pulling.  It’s really not new at all; in fact, it comes from ancient Ayurvedic practices that have been around for thousands of years.

As the eyes are the window to the soul, the mouth is the window to the body.  The health of your mouth seems to be the indicator of your overall physical health.  Maintaining exceptional oral health is a worthy commitment.

A big believer in flossing and brushing, I have never been one to go for mouthwash.  It’s just … well, never been my thing.  Mouthwash uses harsh chemicals, including chlorhexidine, and alcohol.  Oil pulling, on the other hand, is pure and natural, and has benefits that, for me, are compelling – with no downside (except for the 20 minutes during which you can’t talk).

So, what is it?  Oil pulling involves swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and in between your teeth for 20 minutes.  (I use a little less since it bulks up in your mouth over the course of swishing and a tablespoon doesn’t give me enough room to swish well.)  For the most freshness and additional health benefits, add 1 or 2 drops of your favorite essential oil.  I have tried clove oil, which is particularly beneficial for oral health, but my favorite and regular choice is peppermint essential oil.

Do it first thing in the morning, when you first wake up, before drinking or putting anything else in your mouth.  The coconut oil acts like a magnet, luring bad bacteria out of those hidden crevices and pulling it away from your teeth and gums.  In addition, the practice naturally whitens your teeth!  Be sure and breathe in deeply while swishing to fully enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the essential oil.

When you have swished long enough, spit out the contents into a garbage receptacle – not down the drain.  Keep your mouth clean – and your pipes clean; so, avoid the possibility of clogging your drain by spitting into the sink.

After a month now, I can attest that my teeth and mouth feel fresher and cleaner than ever.  I never worry about bad breath, and my teeth do even seem whiter.  It’s worth toasting with a glass of my favorite red wine!

Cheers! (for the great wine) and Cheese! (for the great smile).
