Love in 2018

Happy New Year!  Though love in our English language is a problematic word that runs the gamut of use from the most shallow of realms to the greatest of depths, it is, nonetheless, one of our most important words.  There is nothing that can fully replace those three precious words, I love you.

At midnight on New Year’s Eve, among all of the noise and confetti, the practice is to find someone to kiss.  Hopefully, that someone is indeed a loved one, but sometimes it may just be another partygoer.  For some people, it may even be a complete stranger.  The secret hope attached to the kiss is to find love in the coming year.

On the threshold of 2018, my wish for each of you is love in 2018.  Therefore, I am dedicating the next several days – the first week of 2018 – to contemplating this most simple yet complicated subject.  My premise begins with the Two Greatest Commandments from Jesus:  1) Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength; and  2) Love your neighbor as yourself.
