Forget about it! Regardless of whether your skin is oily or dry, skin is skin and has a uniform need for good care. Billions of dollars are made by the skin care industry differentiating “skin types” and making a fortune selling a multitude of products supposedly designed to cater to your particular needs.
Here’s the problem: Your “skin type” is likely produced by the bad products you are using on it! Often, more bad products are created to counteract the bad products you are already using! If you think your skin is oily, you look for products that are drying, not realizing they may be causing your skin to overproduce needed oils. If you think your skin is dry, you look for products that claim to be hydrating and “non-greasy.” Have you checked the ingredients? Water does not hydrate your skin. In fact, your water-based products are likely contributing to your dryness.
Rather than focusing on “skin type,” we should be focusing on skin health.
Healthy skin is fresh, balanced, and hydrated. Healthy skin has a protective barrier that works mightily protecting the body from contaminants and disease. Nourishing, strengthening, and supporting this protective barrier is critical for skin health. Good skin care seeks to:
- maintain the skin’s natural pH balance;
- provide natural cleansing that does not strip the skin of its sebum; and
- encourage the skin to do its naturally beneficial job of working to maintain that protective barrier.
Skin health is a subject worthy of significant consideration. It should call into question the kinds of ingredients used in skin care products. It should call us to seek healthy ways to care for our skin. It should motivate us to want to eliminate chemicals, preservatives, alcohol, fragrances, and other additives to the products we use on our skin.
